An example of an overnight backpacking trip I can guide you on is a trip from the Sloatsburg train station (NJ Transit from Penn Station or Hoboken) to Stone Memorial Shelter in Harriman State Park.

This hike involves a one mile road walk from & to the station to get to the trails and back to the train.

The hike to the shelter steadily climbs past a rocky brook and a picturesque pond (fishing is an option!). Take a break at the Ga-Na-Quah rocks before continuing on to the Stone Memorial Shelter on the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail. Catch the sunrise from “The Egg” before heading back the way we came. For the more adventurous, an alternative path back takes you along the rocky “Cascade of Slid.”

End the hike at one of the terrific coffee shops or enjoy a craft beer in Sloatsburg before catching the train back to the City.

Yes–the NYC skyline is in this pic!
The trail. In summer the stream tends to run dry–not always the case the rest of the year!
